My Nigerian barber stopped cold mid-cut, to admire a girl who was walking out of the barbershop.
I had seen her in the mirror, sitting behind me with her boyfriend. He was speaking to her incessantly, but she was looking around at the other men in the shop, like a lambchop in a skilletfactory .
Then he fist-bumped someone and announced that he was leaving.
She got up too. Nobody responded to him but everyone stopped to watch her go.
My barber also stopped cutting me for a few seconds and he uttered “Phew … Ukunwa diegwu”. And he smiled under his breath.
Another dude behind me mumbled something in agreement.
I smiled at my barber and told him “I don’t know what you said but I know what you said.
He almost died.
