When America sneezes
I remember a story from way back in my Caribbean tourism reporting days, about how Caribbean islands were encouraged by international organizations to swap their agri economy for the more lucrative tourism economies that are heavily dependent on American tourists visiting. Tourism took flight, but there were people pointing out that the economy was resting on a thin, vulnerable base that could crack easily.
I don’t remember who told me the story, but I remember this person being worried. “If America sneezes, we get a persistent cold up here in the Caribbean,” he pondered.
I would love to hear his views now.
